Whitman Crew (WC) values a system to protect its participants from physical abuse, sexual abuse, and other types of abuse and misconduct that can be harmful to student-athletes and other participants. The needs of our student-athletes, coaches, parents, and administrators are at the heart of our efforts. Learning from the past, WC embraces the broad range of questions and concerns of all involved in the success of our program. Through careful reflection, WC values the importance of having independent and confidential representatives to provide advice to student-athletes, coaches, parents, and administrators regarding their rights and responsibilities.
To achieve this aim, WC entered into a Memorandum of Understanding with two national leaders in the SafeSport and student-athlete development field. Dr. Matt Moore is an Associate Professor and Chair for the Department of Social Work at Ball State University (Indiana). Dr. Moore has over 15 years of experience in competitive coaching (varsity high school to Division I) and SafeSport oversight (Indy Fuel Hockey Organization). He is the Co-Founder and Immediate Past President of the Alliance of Social Workers in Sports and the Editor of the Sport Social Work Journal. Dr. Moore has dozens of publications on student-athlete development, over 50 national conference presentations, and developed the first textbook on Sport Social Work. Ms. Cindy Miller Aron (Oregon) is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with over 25 years of practice experience with elite-level athletes. Ms. Miller currently serves as an Athletic Clinical Consultant and Mental Health Provider, is a member of the Portland State Sports Medicine Team, and is a registered provider for the United States Olympic/Paralympic Committee. Ms. Miller worked extensively with the National Collegiate Athletic Association on the creation of their Mental Health Best Practices Toolkit and the Commission on Sexual Violence. She is a highly regarded presenter and her work receives support from multiple international publications.
Dr. Moore and Ms. Aron will work together to ensure the following for WC: (1) provide independent, confidential advice and assistance at no cost to student-athletes, (2) follow SafeSport requirements of U.S. Rowing, (3) ensure SafeSport compliance of WC partners, (4) assist in the resolution of athlete and parent/spectator concerns and disputes through fact-finding, facilitated communication, and mediation, (5) advocate, along with WC, for fair, transparent, timely and equitably administered policies and processes, and (6) collaborate with WC on the support, development, and training of administrators, coaches, and parents on student-athlete safety, development, and mental and/or behavioral health.
