Whitman Crew Erg-a-thon 2022

February 12
Bumper Car Pavilion - Glen Echo Park

On February 12th, 2022 The Walt Whitman Crew team, alumni, parents and friends will row 1 million meters on ERGs to raise money for the Walt Whitman Crew.  That is like rowing from Washington DC to Chicago!  The event will take place at the Glen Echo Park Bumper Pavillion.  Individuals can also participate virtually if out of town.

Whitman Crew Athletes will have an individual goal of raising $300 (minimum). We will be using the Mightcause Fundraising Platform (formally Razoo) where athletes can set up a personal fundraising page ( a fundraising template is provided) and fundraise using email, peer-to-peer social media fundraising or text-to-give.  Off-line donations (checks payable to Walt Whitman Crew Boosters) can also be accepted.

The event will be held live at the Bumper Car Pavilion on Saturday February 12th from 8 am - 2 pm where we will set up drinks, food, music and 25 ERGs.  Athletes will sign-up for one of the 3 waves (2 hour time slots) for that day. We anticipate that individual Whitman crew athletes will row 16,000 to 20,000 meters each.  Athletes should ask their coaches for guidance on setting an appropriate goal.  Alumni, parents and friends can also participate by helping us ERG to meet the one million meter goal and/or by helping us to fundraise.  There is a separate information sheet available for alumni, parents and friends.  Alumni, parents and friends who would like to participate should contact Marianne Sullivan at mariannesullivanmd@icloud.com.

Proceeds from the ERG-A-THON will help offset the costs of running the Walt Whitman Crew Program.  Additionally, individual donations for the ERG-A-THON at the $100 and above level (up to a total of $10,000) will be matched 1:1 to support Baltimore Community Rowing/ Reach High Rowing program which provides scholarship support to athletes from under-resourced communities in the Baltimore metro area.

To add a little friendly competition on the fundraising side, there will be a fundraising leaderboard for the event updated in real time.  Walt Whitman Crew athletes will be eligible for the following fundraising incentives:

  • raise $500, receive a Whitman Crew Nalgene water bottle
  • raise $750, receive a Whitman Crew Nalgene water bottle and a $25 gift card ( choice of Starbucks or Chipotle)
  • Raise $1,000, receive a Whitman Crew Nalgene water bottle and a $50 gift card ( choice of Starbucks or Chipotle)

Grand Prizes:  Top 3 overall fundraisers will choose from Oakley polarized sunglasses, JBL Flip 5 portable speaker or Yeti waterbottle (top fundraiser chooses first, next top fundraiser chooses from the remaining 2 prizes and the final prize is awarded to the 3rd top fundraiser).

The Mightycause platform is easy to use.  Athletes can set up their individual fundraising pages using this link:

Click on ‘Join This Event’ and then ‘Join This Fundraiser’ and a fundraising template will appear.  Customize with a picture from crew this fall (Margo Zaneski took so many great ones that can be downloaded from this link.  The password for the crew folder is "Dulcinea") and edit the text to support why you row.  The final step is to publish your page and you are all ready to go!

Please note, your fundraising page can be updated at any time using the edit function. This includes raising the fundraising goal if you begin to approach your initial target, changing your picture or text.

Note: you can edit your page at any time including changing your photo, story or increasing your fundraising goal.

Fundraising using email, peer-to-peer fundraising using Facebook or Twitter and text-to-give

Once your fundraising page is published, you can begin your fundraising. Fundraising can be done by asking for pledges per kilometer (for a 20,000 meter goal it is 20 kilometers) or a flat pledge amount. You can accept checks made out to Walt Whitman Crew Boosters or on-line credit card payments. Credit card payments are processed on the Mightycause site through the Donate link on your fundraising page. You will collect any checks and hold them until the end of the fundraising drive and then drop them by Teagan Sullivan’s house (7713 Maryknoll Court Bethesda). If you collect checks or ask for pledges by the kilometer, see below for instructions on how to process.

On your fundraising page there are icons to share your page/link via twitter, Facebook or through email. There is also an option on the left hand side of adding an instagram feed. If you want to offer supporters the option to donate by kilometer erged, make sure your fundraising page tells them how to do it (they make a pledge in the ‘join the conversation’ section and you will follow-up with them after the event to let them know how far your erged and collect either through a credit card payment on the Mightycause site or by check made out to Walt Whitman Crew Boosters.)

In addition to neighbors, friends and family, consider asking your supporters to share you page on social media.

Text-to-give provides donors the ability to donate directly from a smart device

This is optional - only ask for a key word if you will be utilizing text to give. If you would like to use text-to-give as part of your campaign you will need select a unique keyword that your supporters will text to 844-844-6844. At this time those unique keywords need to be submitted by an administrator - so you will need to email - mariannesullivanmd@icloud.com and list 2-3 keywords in the order that you would like. The first one that is available will be added to your text-to-give campaign. Please note, athletes should cc: their parents when sending an email to mariannesullivanmd@icloud.com and she will get back to you with your texting keyword.

How to enter checks manually on your page so they count towards your fundraising goal

Offline donations (checks payable to Walt Whitman Crew Boosters) are accepted and can be added to your fundraising totals by selecting the $ on the left hand side of the page, then “Donation Report”. On the donation report in the upper right is a ‘+ offline donation’ button. Select that and add the information for the offline donation. These amounts should be collected (and stored safely) until the end of the ERG–a-thon. Checks can be dropped off at Teagan Sullivan’s house 7713 Maryknoll Court Bethesda MD.

The Donation reports page will show all of your donations - online on the system as well as offline checks you have entered.

How pledging by the kilometer works in the system

This is an option - but you can also choose to only accept flat donations. Since the system does not know how far you will ERG on February 12th, it does not immediately process payments for pledges that are by the kilometer. To allow your supporters this option, let them know in your story on your fundraising page that they can support you by the kilometer rowed (let them know your goal so they have an idea how much to pledge) and to pledge this support by make a notation in the ‘join the conversation’ section at the bottom about how much they are pledging per kilometer. After February 12th, thank these supporters and let them know how far you ERGed. Let them know that they can either go back to your fundraising page and pay their pledge via credit card or give you a check made payable to Walt Whitman Crew Boosters.

If you have any questions please contact mariannesullivanmd@icloud.com. If an athlete is emailing, please include a parent or other adult as a cc: on the message.

GOOD LUCK!
