Coach
Shipley enters his third year as a social studies teacher and coach
at Whitman. After competing on the varsity heavyweight team through
his four years at the University of Pennsylvania, he has coached
ten seasons with girls and boys novice and varsity programs at Woodrow
Wilson High School, Water Street Rowing, Thompson’s Boat Center
and Whitman High School.
His 2002 Whitman
women’s freshman eight went undefeated in the regular season
and made the final at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta. In his first year
as Varsity women’s coach, all three varsity boats medaled
at the National Capitol Championship and the 1st and 2nd varsity
crews made the final at the Combined Regional Area Championship.
As the junior
men’s coach at TBC and WSR, Mr. Shipley’s crews have
won the Head of the Potomac and Occoquan Chase. This past summer,
TBC recorded one of its most successful seasons as they successfully
defended their National Championship titles in the Junior Men’s
4+ and 8+. The 4+ went on to win the Royal Canadian Henley Regatta
in St. Catharine’s, Ontario. All told, Coach Shipley’s
crews have won two Canadian Henley titles as well as seven US Rowing
National Championships.
