Montgomery Cup Results 2007/2008

The Stotesbury Cup regatta held on May 16 and May 17 on the Schuylkill river in Following a weekend off from official racing, this regatta took place on April 19 on the Potomac in Georgetown. This was the sixth annual running of the Montgomery Cup and the sun shined on most of the Whitman crews. Being on the Potomac, this race had floating starts with little river current at the time and relatively flat water. Racing involved crews from Whitman, Bethesda Chevy Chase, and Walter Johnson. The Whitman crews won seven out of the ten 1500 meter races and the results are summarized below.

On the girl’s side, the freshman eight won with a dominating time of 5:42.9, quite a distance (35 seconds) ahead of Walter Johnson. The third varsity eight also placed first against cross town rival BCC with a time of 5:57.0 compared to the BCC time of 6:15.5. The Whitman varsity four crossed the finish line first in a time of 6:26.2, more than 10 second ahead of second place Walter Johnson. Keeping Whitman’s winning streak alive, the women’s second varsity eight rowed the 1500 meters in 5:43.2 and beat BCC by more than one length of open water (5:52.7). Finally, the women’s varsity shell fell to first place BCC with a time of 5:40.9 (5 seconds behind BCC) but beat Walter Johnson by more than 2 seconds.

On the boy’s side, Whitman won three of the five races. The two freshman boats raced in the same race with the Whitman A boat coming in first with a time of 5:14.4, about 42 seconds ahead of the Whitman B boat and almost a minute ahead of Walter Johnson. The Whitman third varsity eight finished first with a time of 5:14.7 or 9 seconds ahead of BCC. Good news for the Whitman varsity four, the boat finished first with a time of 5:37.7 or more than 20 seconds of BCC. The second men’s varsity boat and first varsity both placed second behind BCC. The second men’s varsity boat had a time of 5:00.3, just 11 seconds behind city rival BCC (4:49.4). The men’s varsity shell crossed the line in 4:56.2, only four seconds behind BCC (about a boat length) and ahead of Walter Johnson by 10 seconds.
